Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in the Northern Region, has condemned the assault of a Journalist with Tamale-based  Zaa Multimedia, Dokurugu Abubakar Ndeeya and called on the Northern Regional Police Command to employ all legitimate means at their disposal to apprehend the culprits behind the assault and ensure they face the full consequences of the law.

“We pledge our unwavering commitment to liaising with the police authorities to ensure justice prevails in this matter. The regional and national executives of the GJA reaffirm our steadfast dedication to safeguarding all journalists in the region, enabling them to discharge their constitutional duties without fear or intimidation. While we impress upon our colleagues the paramount importance of adhering strictly to the highest ethical standards of our noble profession”. The Association demanded.

Mr.Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, GJA Chairman, Northern Region, indicated that the reporter was violently assaulted on Thursday, May 16, 2024, while attempting to video record an altercation between some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters and a police officer and that during the process of capturing the incident, the reporter was brutally set upon by four individuals suspected to be NPP supporters.

“The despicable perpetrators of this crime were caught on camera, and the victim was fortunately rescued by bystanders at the scene. The GJA Northern Region vehemently condemns these attacks in the strongest possible terms. It is profoundly disheartening and dispiriting that in our modern, civilized society, some still resort to such archaic and primaeval acts of violence as a means of seeking redress. We implore all, especially those in positions of leadership and influence, to unreservedly denounce and reject such deplorable conduct”.

He entreated all leaders, particularly politicians, to join the GJA in unreservedly condemning attacks on journalists.
